JOGANJI 乗願寺

Joganji is a part of the Seizan Jodo sect, located in Jododani, about a 20 minute walk from Yanagidani Kannon. The temple was founded in the 900’s and is known for a large wooden image of Amida Buddha that is 2.8 meters tall and covered with gold leaf.

The Amida Nyorai is also called "Big Buddha", "Big Buddha of Jododani", and "Big Buddha of Nishiyama". It is known to have been carved in the late Heian period. Since then there have been many repairs including a major restoration in recent years.

It is said that if you wish that your current luck will continue in the future, walk clockwise around this statue while praying. If you want to improve your bad luck, go counterclockwise. Men are supposed to touch the left knee of the Great Buddha, and women touch her right knee to worship and receive the mercy of Amida Nyorai.

There are many elements in the prayer hall including metal and paper lanterns and photos from generations ago which add to the mystical atmosphere of this space.

After visiting this small temple it is recommended to walk through the surrounding village to get a taste of the quiet mountain farming life that is common on the outskirts of Kyoto.
