OYAMAZAKI

Oyamazaki has been a focal point for transportation since ancient times because it is located at the confluence of the Katsura River, Uji River and Kizu River. These rivers are located at the foot of the hillside and stretch deep into the plains.

Although Oyamazaki is the smallest town in area in Kyoto Prefecture, throughout it’s history it was a place of great strategic importance due to its location. Many wars were fought here including a battle between two of the most powerful samurai warlords in Japanese history.

SITE DESCRIPTIONS

Rikyu Hachimangu
離宮八幡宮

Rikyu Hachimangu was built on the grounds of the former imperial villa of Emperor Seiwa in the year 859. It is here that Hachiman, the god of victory is enshrined. >>>

 

Chochikukyo
聴竹居

Chochikukyo is a residence built in 1928 in the foothills of Mount Tennozan. The house is considered a masterpiece as it is was the first hybrid of Japanese and Western modern architectural styles. Chochikukyo presents the ideal form of a universal “Japanese house” that suits the climate of Japan as well as the sensitivity and lifestyle of the Japanese people. >>>

 

Hoshakuji
宝積寺

Hoshakuji is located on the hillside of Mt. Tennozan. One of the main trailheads to climb the mountain can be found on the grounds of this temple. Daikokuten, the God of Wealth, who holds a legendary miracle hammer which brings prosperity and wealth, is worshipped at this temple. >>>

 

Hike Tennozan
天王山

Mt. Tenno, or Tennozan is located at the border of Kyoto and Osaka. This was a strategically important mountain in military terms and also for transport. In the past Tennozan was often the scene of battles, and it is particularly famous for the Battle of Yamazaki in 1582, when Toyotomi Hideyoshi defeated Akechi Mitsuhide. >>>

 

Kannonji 観音寺

This ancient temple is located at the foot of Mt. Tennozan and was built by Emperor Uda in the year 899. Kanonji is known for its cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, and is visited by many locals during the spring and autumn seasons. >>>

 

Asahi Beer Oyamazaki
Villa Museum of Art

The Asahi Beer Oyamazaki Villa Museum of Art was originally completed in 1932 and served as the residence of Shotaro Kaga, a wealthy businessman who helped to found the Nikka Whisky Distilling company. It has since become a wonderful art museum with constantly changing world-class exhibitions. It is also home to one of the more underrated gardens in Kyoto, a a place where visitors can enjoy numerous plants which delight the senses year-round. >>>
